Annotation: In 2004 the Ukrainian scientists developed a system of monitoring ice and wind loads on overhead power lines the basic element of which was an automated ice and wind weather post. Weather post operation in field conditions at the substations of the National Electric Company “Ukrenergo” revealed a number of problems of their work. There are considered and briefly characterized some foreign automated systems of monitoring. There are analyzed the reasons of an imperfect operation of the domestic system of monitoring, and there are described the ways of improving the most complex and critical element of an ice and wind weather post – a device to measure ice loading. There is also described the structure and principles of operation of the improved ice and wind weather post which is now being introduced into operation.

Keywords: overhead power lines, ice and wind loads, an automated system of monitoring, a measuring device, a wire simulator, wind direction.
